In this first edition, we've plunged right in so that we can let you know what we're up to. We're sure that the content and the format will evolve as we gain experience with the medium. Please let us know if you find our efforts useful. What follows is a brief overview of what we're up to, some announcements about workshops, lectures and products, and some ideas and resources that we'd like to share beyond what word of mouth alone can accomplish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERMEDIATE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (APRIL 27-28) The Intermediate Digital Photography Workshop is coming up in just a few days. If you are interested and haven't yet registered, do take a moment to visit our web site to learn more: http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp-int.html This workshop is designed for people with some experience in digital imaging (such as our intro class). We will work in the studio and in the field with high-end scanning and instant-capture digital cameras. The workshop will explore photography's evolution into a digitally-based medium, using the technology and discussing the implications and opportunities of this dramatic change. We'll be covering many topics in depth: -digital imaging and cameras -scanning -image editing -color management and profile creation As of this writing, we don't plan to offer this Intermediate class again until the fall. April 27-28, 2002, 9-5 pm, includes lunch. The workshop will be a dynamic combination of a traditional landscape photography workshop while diving deep into the digital age. http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp-land-sf.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE LANGUAGE OF PHOTOGRAPHY TV SERIES PBS KCSM-TV (Channel 60 in the SF Bay Area) is airing "The Language Of Photography," a production that examines how photographs can profoundly effect our perception of the world. I was interviewed last summer and am one of seven photographers featured. The program airs Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM and nationwide broadcast is expected for this fall. Check out http://www.ekcsm.org/ for more info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT'S UP - The Digital National Parks Project The field photography for the parks project is basically done, any additional work will just give us an even richer selection of work from which to choose. To date, we've traveled about 75,000 miles and worked in over 50 parks. We're moving into the public phase of the project, bringing these years of work into final form. Our current plan is to produce the book and DVD in the first phase, followed by the traveling exhibition and documentary video. This, of course, means a new fund-raising effort, which we are just getting underway. Interested Angels are welcome to get in touch. The preliminary book design is already 115 pages and growing toward its 256 page target. Meanwhile much work has been done on the DVD, the exhibit and on the video. The DVD has been prototyped for computer use and tests are being done on stand-alone players. We believe that this is the comprehensive result we have looked forward to and are very excited by how it is shaping up. We are also experimenting with home DVD slide show disks and variations. - The new Foveon sensor I've been consulting with Foveon for a few years now and am impressed by their innovations. When they described their full resolution color chip to me a few years back, I was very excited by its prospects. I started testing the camera last summer and have made a number of good quality photographs. We were quite busy in February with this work and I've posted some samples on my website: http://www.sjphoto.com/web-special I'll write more about this exciting development in the next newsletter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- STUFF I LIKE - A Few Books There are so many excellent books related to photography that I have enjoyed over the years. Each month I plan to write a bit about a book that has moved me, influenced me, or simply got me to work harder and care more. - Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland. 1993. Image Continuum Press, PO Box 5243, Santa Cruz, CA 95062-5243 ISBN 0-9614547-3-3 This is a book that confronts our love/hate relationship to making art, including the imperative and the confidence assault. Well worth reading, written by two thoughtful photographers. - Beauty in Photography. Robert Adams. Aperture, 1981. ISBN 0-89381-080-0 (cloth) ISBN 0-89381-087-8 (paper) One of the most cogent expressions of beauty, photography and the effort to join the two into works that move us and make a difference in our lives. Out of print, but worth finding. We've seen it now and then in www.barnesandnoble.com's Out of Print books section. - Good Gear Solux near daylight MR16 bulbs. I print to daylight color temperature (5000-6500°k). I believe it is our only constant, variable though it may be. Finding an artificial light source near daylight has traditionally been no small task. The Solux bulbs rise to the occasion. These bulbs are particularly useful with pigment prints that overreact to changes in lighting color temperature. You can learn more at http://www.eiko-ltd.com. - Other Workshops Al Weber Landscape Photography Workshops. (831) 624-5535 There's no finer photography instructor than Al Weber. He has been a friend and partner in many projects over the years and I am proud to recommend his workshops. Time spent with Al is well worth the effort. This is the last year of his full field workshop schedule. You can learn more at http://www.geocities.com/~morrell/awnews2002.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PARK LANDS I've been serving as a Board member of the Pacifica Land Trust for a year and a half. I became involved because Mori Point, a dramatic headland jutting into the Pacific, was once again on the auction block for commercial development in late 2000. In response, we undertook a massive effort to create and mail a fund-raising plea to help buy the land. The Trust for Public Land, the California Coastal Conservancy and the Pacifica Land Trust outbid the developers and the land entered the National Park system in late March 2002 as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A celebration of the headlands becoming park lands will be held on May 5, 2002. http://www.pacificalandtrust.org/ http://www.pacificalandtrust.org/mori-event.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE VISIT US Please make a point to visit our studio, and see our original prints in the gallery. Schooled in the traditions of fine-art western landscape photography, Johnson has taken his understanding of traditional photographic processes and brought those skills to bear on the emerging technologies and aesthetics of digital photography. He has worked with technology companies to achieve the best of what image making can be, and pushed his own vision of how we see and record light in the natural world. This has led him to conclude that the way we have traditionally captured images with silver-based photography has been a poor and distortive view of the real and rich world before our eyes. His photographs look almost "unphotographic" in their clarity and purity of color. He shows us a world we know, but rarely see on paper. His is a truly remarkable vision." [From an exhibit at The Photographer's Gallery, Palo Alto, CA, 1998.] The advance of high-end digital cameras, with their unique abilities to see and record light, have the potential to change many of the ways we think about photography, including how we think a photograph should look. With their extended dynamic range and unprecedented color accuracy, digital sensors can offer dramatically higher image quality than film. The photographic print is evolving concurrently with direct digital printing, now moving onto pigmented prints lasting hundreds of years on a wide variety of substrates. Spend an evening with Stephen in his gallery discussing light, beauty, composition, and the landscape. Learn about one man's vision of this brave new digital world from the photographer who has been on the bleeding edge of this new technology for years. Seating limited to 20. Admission: $5. RSVP is required as capacity is limited. Call us at (650) 355-7507 or email michelle@sjphoto.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FEATURED PRINT OFFER FOR JUNE 2002 "Dune at Dusk, Mono Lake" from the 1980 exhibition "At Mono Lake" http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_june_2002.html "My first visit to Mono Lake left me fascinated with its strangeness and intrigued by its beauty. As the years passed I've felt compelled to return many times, drawn by a magical light and expansive space I've rarely seen. Slowly, I began to understand a few of the lake's moods and the tragedy unfolding on its shores." "In 1979 the idea of a photographic exhibition emerged from conversations with David Gaines and others of the Mono Lake Committee. Photographers Al Weber and Don Worth agreed to help with print selection. Brett Weston, a self-declared 'Mono-maniac', and Ansel Adams offered to lend prints to the effort. Very encouraged, and with the help of many photographers, I built the traveling exhibition 'At Mono Lake'." The exhibition reached an audience of well over four million people from 1980-1989 and selections are currently on display at the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center. This month's print, "Dune at Dusk, Mono Lake", was featured in the exhibition and the exhibition catalog. It is an excellent example of the affection for pastel color that has been central to my work for twenty years. We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame for $195.00. This print at this price is offered through June 30. We'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by July 15. This photograph won't be available again at this price. More information on the exhibition is available at: http://www.sjphoto.com/aml-home.html Copies of the cloth-bound limited edition of the "At Mono Lake" exhibition catalog are available at: http://www.sjphoto.com/products_illus.html#products01d We'd like to thank everyone who ordered "Orchid", May's featured print. If you haven't ordered yet, there's still time. The last day to order is May 31. You can find more information at: http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BEGINNING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP (JUNE 26-27) We have a Beginning Digital Photography Workshop coming up at the end of June. If you're interested and haven't yet registered, do take a moment to visit our web site to learn more: http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp.html The workshop will concentrate on digital photography's possibilities as a fine-arts photography tool, using Macintosh computers, Adobe's Photoshop software and inkjet printers. All necessary equipment will be provided during the workshop and topics will be discussed in non-technical terms. You'll leave having a good grasp of the kind of equipment you need to accomplish your goals, budgets, priorities, and best of all, what you can do with these ever more capable and amazing tools. The nearby Pacific Ocean beach should provide a fairly nice field trip opportunity. June 26-27, 2002, 9-5 pm, includes lunch. On site at the Stephen Johnson Photography Studios Pacifica, CA (near San Francisco) Enrollment is limited. $600 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DIGITAL PRINTING WORKSHOP (JULY 9-10) This workshop focuses exclusively on fine-art digital printing, primarily using Epson inkjet printers. It concentrates on inkjet printing with pigment inks and black/gray ink combinations on coated and rag papers. You can find all of the details at: http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-print-wkshp.html We will cover workflow issues, color management, correcting color casts, adjustment layers, custom profile generation, editing and inspection. Since there is no magic bullet for making good prints, the workshop will also explore old fashioned testing, careful color judgments and interactively honing in on the best print possible. Finally, we will also introduce a variety of fine art papers and discuss their visual qualities, advantages, and problems. Our discussions will also include an exploration of print aesthetics in the digital age, including: - what makes for a beautiful print? - do the new possibilities enhance our notion of what photography can be? - are we imitating traditional photographic processes or discovering something new? July 9-10, 2002, 9-5 pm, includes lunch. On site at the Stephen Johnson Photography Studios Pacifica, CA (near San Francisco) Enrollment is limited. $600 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ANSEL ADAMS SYMPOSIUM Yosemite National Park - June 19-23, 2002. You can learn more about the Great Central Valley project at: http://www.sjphoto.com/gcvp-home.html "This photograph barely existed. I noticed the clouds and cattle along Hwy 140 on the way back from Yosemite, stopped the van, and spent the next half hour setting up the 4x5 on the roof platform and making a few well composed but lifeless images. Just as I was giving up and starting to put the camera away, the light burst out and spot-lit the horizon. I quickly reassembled the camera and made an exposure, and as I pulled the film holder to make a back-up the magical light disappeared." We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame for $195. This print at this price will be offered through July 30. You can find all of the details at: http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-print-wkshp.html July 9-10, 2002, 9-5 pm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TECHNICAL ISSUES: DEEP BITS: Photography's Possibilities With 48 bit Digital Color "I've been advocating high bit depth digital imaging since 1993 and continue to believe in its usefulness. The original Leafscan 45 and Leaf DCS camera back proved the value of high bit depth imagery to me. Here's a bit from a 1997 text." High bit depth digital photographs, with up to 16 bits per channel, are an important step forward in the evolution of digital imagery. Working with high bit depth files is a bit like working with a digital Zone System, it gives you the freedom to impose and alter your vision of the final image at any time, without sacrificing the original image quality. For scanning, digital image capture, generating separations and archiving, 16 bit grayscale/48 bit color has the real advantages of expanding our options and preserving real information. High bit depth data makes representing subtle tone distinctions, like the smooth tonal gradation in the sky between the horizon and the zenith, more likely to be smooth. It also makes it possible for a scanner to capture and hold subtle detail in the shadows and/or highlights of a contrasty image with a large dynamic range. From an editing standpoint, anything other than minor edits benefit from working in a 48 bit space, it provides a great deal more latitude in imposing contrast and color balance changes on the image without causing posterization. And finally, given the rapidly changing face of the digital imaging world where repurposing is common, preserving detail, data and options is the name of the game. We'll post a longer piece by Stephen and Bruce Fraser on our website soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE VIEW FROM HERE: A Digital Downside I recently completed a brochure for a local non-profit. Many of the photographs for the piece were supplied by the client, and many were event related and irreplaceable. Here I am, a long-term advocate of digital photography, and I am stuck with a bunch of problematic images that unfortunately were completely necessary to the piece. They were way too contrasty, oversharpened and full of JPEG artifacts. Any $10 disposable film camera would likely have done better. It's a shame that as digital cameras have proliferated, their image quality and presets often screw things up so badly. Clearly, this doesn't have to be the case, a slightly higher price tag and more information about overriding the default settings (or better yet, better default settings) would eliminate much of the problem. I've been approached by a few organizations that are interested in building digital camera tutorials that maximize the effectiveness of these little cameras. Clearly a little information can help a lot, so at the risk of speaking to the converted: Basic digital camera settings for maximum image quality: - Contrast set to Low - Sharpen set to Low or Off - use TIFF or RAW files (avoid JPEG compression, or at least use the highest quality JPEG setting) - Digital Zoom Off - Lowest ISO setting - only use the LCD monitor for quick review to extend battery life ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WITH A NEW EYE: The Latest News The 101 page preliminary book design in place for the last few months has been miraculously transformed into 238 pages in a matter of a few days. I guess the process was just gestating, waiting for me to spend a few days amid the general workload of this rather complex profession I've chosen. Most all of the parks that I've visited are now represented in the book, and additional maps and journal excerpts for the new chapters are underway. Design challenges continue to present themselves, not the least of which is fitting the sheer number of images available into the space I've planned for, 256 pages. No book editing job has even been easy. It was a real pleasure to include the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and pull in a Mori Point panoramic. Helping to create an addition to a national park is one of the best rewards of all. The right publisher has not yet been found. If you have the ear of someone involved in book publishing or distribution, let us know. More news as the project progresses. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EXHIBITS, TALKS AND GALLERY DISPLAYS - The Peninsula Advertising Photographers Association. Stephen spent the evening of June 6th with PAPA, the Peninsula Advertising Photographers Association, telling them about the history, goals, and status of "With a New Eye" and discussing the role that digital technologies have played in its inception and execution. We had a great time and enjoyed the audience's participation. More info on PAPA can be found at: http://www.papaphoto.org * If you know of a group that would enjoy spending time with Stephen, we'd like to hear from you. His talks cover a variety of topics that include digital photography, landscape photography and aesthetics, and the "With a New Eye" project. Please contact Michelle at (650) 355-7507 or email michelle@sjphoto.com. - The Ansel Adams Symposium Yosemite National Park - June 19-23, 2002. Stephen will be taking part in a four day symposium, "Edges and Intersections: The Evolution of Change", conducted by the Ansel Adams Gallery. He will be participating in a round-table discussion concerning the opportunities and challenges facing us in the digital world. http://www.anseladams.com/taag/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&Product_ID=815&CATID=27 - Ansel Adams Exhibit At The Oakland Museum June 29 - September 22, 2002. Stephen's work will be part of the upcoming exhibit "Ansel Adams: Inspiration and Influence" at the Oakland Museum, 1000 Oak Street, Oakland 510-238-3005. A visit by their Art Guild to our gallery is also scheduled as part of the exhibit related events. http://www.museumca.org/exhibit/exhi_adams.html - Stephen's Work On Display If you can't make it to Pacifica to see Stephen's work in person, it's on display at a number of locations. This month, we'd like to recommend: ISLG (Interior Services of Los Gatos) 12 North Santa Cruz Avenue Los Gatos, CA 95030 (408) 378-2075 or their Campbell, CA showroom at: 287 East Campbell Avenue Campbell, CA 95008 For other locations, see: http://www.sjphoto.com/original-prints-galleries.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- STUFF I LIKE TO USE - Software Quantum Mechanic/PhotoMechanic www.camerabits.com Dennis Walker's Camerabits software continues to impress me with its versatility in instant capture digital camera image repair, file organization and tone adjustments. My primary use of the software has been on Kodak DCS 460 files, but I have found it useful for many small cameras as well. The latest versions support new cameras from Canon and Nikon. - Hardware/supplies Hahnemuhle German Etching and Lyson Standard Fine Art inkjet papers http://www.hahnemuhle.com/ http://www.lyson.com/ I've printed with these coated rag papers for years now and have been very impressed with the image quality possible. The beauty of the image merging with the paper fiber reminds me of what I've always loved about printmaking with cyanotypes and platinum. To now have the ability to print color images onto a rag paper is wonderful. We don't seem to be getting any UV glow that would indicate optical brighteners in the papers and tests indicate they are among the best for archival stability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE VISIT US Please come visit us at our gallery and see our original prints in person. They have the unique ability to give the viewer a better understanding of an entire scene. With the advent of digital panoramic photography, whole new vistas have opened up that let viewers experience the surround of a space interactively. In 1995 I began to use a hand crafted panoramic adapter for my Better Light scanning camera. It opened up a new dimension for me, panoramics with such resolution and clarity that they became the most encompassing photographic experience I have ever encountered. I coined the term "immersive" to describe the effect of the big surround prints. This talk explores the evolution of my digital panoramic work. http://www.sjphoto.com/lecture-seriesDigPan.html http://www.sjphoto.com/digital_pano.html Admission: $5. Admission price can be applied to any purchase during the evening. RSVP is required as seating is limited to 20 guests. Call (650) 355-7507 or email michelle@sjphoto.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SEYBOLD GALLERY The Seybold San Francisco show at the Moscone Convention Center (September 10-12) will feature a gallery by Stephen Johnson Photography. Featured prints will be digital panoramics and other new work. There will be daily drawings for books and posters. Please come by and see us at booth 730. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FEATURED PRINT OFFER - August 2002 "Denali" is a black and white photograph from my trip to Alaska in 1988. The evening this photograph was made, we stood enraptured by the mountain for many hours, until long past midnight, listening to the wind on the peaks, watching the light slowly glow to a warm sunset then fade to shades of blue and gray. This is the first offering of a digital print from this negative. You can see the image, and more information about our special print program at: http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_august_2002.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WORKSHOP NEWS We'd like to mention some of our upcoming workshops, including two field photography workshops. Please check out our workshop web page for more complete information: http://www.sjphoto.com/workshops.html - Beginning Digital Photography Workshops (September 17-18, November 13-14) This workshop will concentrate on understanding the workings of digital photography and its possibilities as a fine-arts tool. http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp.html - Intermediate Digital Photography Workshop (October 23-24) This workshop will explore photography's evolution into a digitally based medium. It is designed for people with some experience in digital imaging (such as our intro class). http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp-int.html - Digital Printing Workshop (October 3-4) This workshop focuses exclusively on fine-art digital printing, primarily using Epson inkjet printers. http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-print-wkshp.html - Mono Lake Field Workshop (October 10-13) The workshop will be a dynamic combination of a traditional landscape photography workshop and an exploration of the new possibilities of the digital age. http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp-land-ml.html - Death Valley Field Workshop (January 15-18, 2003) The trip is designed to be a complete immersion in landscape photography and its digital evolution. We will discuss technical and aesthetic issues, working toward images that are uniquely your own. http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp-land-dv.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THROUGH THE WORKSHOPS Over the years a number of people with great work have passed through our workshop program. While their efforts have already made some of these artists famous, others have collections of wonderful photographs that have yet to be seen. We've decided to use our newsletter to highlight some of this fine work. The past six months have brought two substantial collections to our attention and we'd like to share them with you. Jesse Bravo was working as a freelance photographer in the Bay area in 1964 when the Beatles first came to San Francisco. He met their plane and followed them through their press conference and performance at the Cow Palace. Jesse used 35mm and 2.25 inch black and white film. The result is a single day's journey worthy of being seen. We are currently helping him produce a set of scans of this work. Andrew Stern recently retired as a professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley. Before then, he worked as a film maker and documentary photographer. In 1959 he spent some time in the coal mining country of Harlan County, Kentucky photographing the people and their struggle to live under marginal conditions. His work is as good as any I've seen from this period, perhaps the best. We are exploring how we can help get the work scanned and seen. Please visit http://www.sjphoto.com/student_work.html to see a sample of this work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EXHIBITS, TALKS AND GALLERY DISPLAYS - Seybold San Francisco 2002. Outstanding Color Quality Sept. 10, 2002 3:30pm-4:30pm This panel discussion, moderated by Bruce Fraser, and including Stephen, will look into what it takes to go the extra mile to achieve the best possible color. http://www.sjphoto.com/seybold-2002-redir.html - PhotoPlus Expo New York Stephen will be presenting several workshops at this year's PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, including: o Professional Digital Cameras in the Studio and on Location October 31, 2002, 3:45-5:45 o Latest Developments in Digital Print Output (panelist) November 1, 2002, 9:00-12:00 o The Filmless Photographer: Tools and Techniques November 2, 2002, 10:15-12:15 You can find more information about the Photoplus Expo at: http://www.photoplusexpo.com - Ansel Adams Exhibit At The Oakland Museum June 29 - September 22, 2002. Stephen's work is part of the ongoing exhibit "Ansel Adams: Inspiration and Influence" at the Oakland Museum, 1000 Oak Street, Oakland 510-238-3005. http://www.museumca.org/exhibit/exhi_adams.html - Stephen's Work On Display If you can't make it to Pacifica to see Stephen's work in his gallery, it's on display elsewhere as well. We'd like to recommend: Focus Gallery Ltd. 43 Museum Street London WC1A 1LY telephone: 020 7242 7191 http://www.focusgallery.co.uk/m17.html For other locations, see: http://www.sjphoto.com/original-prints-galleries.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- An Ansel Adams Symposium Retrospective Stephen was privileged to be a participant in the "Ansel Adams: Edges and Intersections in Yosemite" symposium in late June. In this section he shares his experiences at the event. For the first time since the days of Friends of Photography in Carmel, I felt like I was among a family fully immersed in the love of landscape photography. It was a great feeling. Most of Ansel's former assistants were there, John Sexton, Ted Orland, Chris Rainier, Alan Ross, most of whom I knew. It felt good to chat and share common ground. My good friend and photographer Al Weber (also a noted AA workshop Instructor) came up for a day. It was a good reunion for many. Jerry Uelsmann was in his usual great humor and I very much enjoyed spending some more time with Olivia Parker. The presentations mostly centered around the details of Ansel's life and work, the assistants stories were great and had the room roaring more than once. It was the first time I had met Ron Partridge (Imogen Cunningham's son and Ansel's assistant during the 30's). He was an irreverent delight. I thoroughly enjoyed Ron and his daughters, even getting a preview of Ron's book which is coming out in the fall. It seemed to end too soon, but brains were full and the re-formed family dispersed again. Looking back, it seemed clear that in addition to what Ansel Adams had meant to many of us individually, he had also become a gathering point for like-minded people sharing their unique love of photography. Friends of Photography broadened that impact, but soon after Ansel died and they moved to San Francisco they seemed to loose their way. Now that Friends is also gone, it would be nice if some other ongoing framework could be created so those of us with f64 inclinations could regularly commune again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WITH A NEW EYE: DVD I've always understood that the Digital National Parks Project would require an interactive display, much like what I did with The Great Central Valley Project in 1986. As I was working in the field making the photographs, a vision of what I needed to accomplish formed in my mind and I realized that an interactive DVD would be the perfect vehicle. In 2001, my assistant Dave Gardner and I began building prototypes of the DVD and the current version does an excellent job of realizing my goals. The following outline gives you an idea of the breadth of subjects we are covering. Title/Sponsors Here we thank the people who helped us out. Main Menu This section includes the Project Overview, an Artist's Statement, a Timeline, info about Making History, and a Gallery of Project Firsts. The Technology This section documents the scanning camera, describes Stephen's field and studio equipment, and the software that he uses. 50 Park galleries The main portfolio section of the disk with photographs & maps. Press This section includes press coverage, publications, and video coverage. We're trying to decide which image we should use, and would like to hear your thoughts. You can see the candidates at: http://www.sjphoto.com/pano-web/poster.htm Please email us your thoughts at lists@sjphoto.com. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SOFTWARE - What imaging software tools would you like to see created? Various software companies frequently ask us for input on what imaging tools we'd like to see. We'd like to include your input into the process, so please email us your ideas (lists@sjphoto.com). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HARDWARE - The New Epson printers. The 2200 is looking quite good, it gives fairly good color prints and reasonable black and whites right out of the box. My friend Bill Atkinson is completing profiles for the 9600/7600 on Epson papers that will be available for free from Epson's website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE VISIT US Please come visit us at our gallery and see our original prints in person. Last February Foveon announced the first full resolution color instant capture camera, using their X3 Sensor. It caused quite a stir, sparking everything from shock to admiration and disbelief. At Photokina in Germany last week, Sigma began showing the shipping version of the camera (due later this month) with a surprising price of $1800. Steve has been consulting with Foveon for many years and has been testing the X3 technology for over a year. Steve and Dick will talk about their perspectives on the camera and this breakthrough technology. Most of the time will be given to Mr. Lyon's presentation on the technology. http://www.sjphoto.com/lecture-series_X3.html Admission: $5. Admission price can be applied to any purchase during the evening. RSVP is required as seating is limited. Call (650) 355-7507 or email michelle@sjphoto.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SEYBOLD REVIEW Stephen Johnson Photography staged a gallery at the Seybold San Francisco show again this year. The gallery was organized into themes, Digital Panoramics, With a New Eye: The Digital National Parks Project, Empowerment, and Design and Publishing. The gallery was very well attended, at times it was so crowded that it was hard to see the work. People seemed to be especially entranced by our large panoramic prints, including David Morgenstern from CreativePro.com. You can read an excerpt of his Seybold Staff report here: http://www.sjphoto.com/seyboldsf2002cpro.html Nearby on the show floor was a Tribute Gallery to the Victims of September 11, which included a 160 inch long print of Steve's dramatic New York Skyline photograph from 1998. San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. marked the anniversary of September 11th by joining Stephen for a ceremonial donation of the large panoramic print. Mayor Brown enthusiastically accepted the donation of the print, which will be given in turn as a gift to the City of New York by the City of San Francisco. Mayor Brown attended the presentation at 11:40am during Seybold SF 2002 Conference on September 11th at Moscone Convention Center. A web gallery of the event can be found at: http://www.sjphoto.com/seyboldsj02.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FEATURED PRINT OFFER October 2002 Trees, Fitzgerald Reserve. 1994. 11x14 Quadtone Print on Rag paper This is the first serious photograph I made with inventor Michael Collette's prototype digital scanning camera. Using Prototype #2 in March 1994, with Mike in attendance, this black and white infrared image was made in low light and gentle rain. This was a breakthrough image for me, as it was the first successful photograph I made with the camera, one that I could show friends and colleagues and which cemented the idea that the ambitious National Parks project I had dreamed up might actually be viable. A large print of this image is included in the Oakland Museum of California's show: Ansel Adams: Inspiration and Influence. More information about the show is available at: http://www.museumca.org/exhibit/exhi_adams.html You can see the image, and more information about our special print program at: http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_october_2002.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WORKSHOP NEWS We'd like to mention some of our upcoming workshops. Or that the full moon will rise in Moab, Utah at 6:38pm on October 20th? This kind of data can very useful when you're planning a photographic outing. We've found a great source of information about the travels of the sun and the moon for a particular day at: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html and for an entire year at: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.html We thought you might find them useful too. If you have similar resources that you'd like to share with the rest of the list, send them to lists@sjphoto.com and we'll try to work them into future issues of the newsletter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EMPOWERMENT Digital Photography in the aid of Community Development Projects: The Pacifica Civic Center Project I continue to sound this theme: digital technology gives us a unique power to effect our concerns. Here in our coastal town of Pacifica, near San Francisco, a rather contentious local election is brewing, fueled by issues of housing developments and a new Civic Center. A few years ago, we built a new sewage treatment plant here in Pacifica. This left the old site near the Pier and the beach as vacant City property and an option agreement with a developer was signed to build a hotel retail complex there. After many years of delay the project lingers. Meanwhile Pacifica finds itself in need of a new public library and desires a single-site Civic Center. In another area just down the road, ironically next to the new sewage treatment plant and Mori Point (the new addition to our National Parks), another development process is underway. The big guns of a $600 million Texas developer are spending $200,000 in our community trying to buy the election approval for a 300 home housing project, masquerading it as a new library and civic center. We are working in support of a multi-use plan for developing the site of the old treatment plant. This plan would provide Pacifica with the facilities it needs without tying them to a large housing project. We photographed the site, digitally stripped away the existing facilities, imaged the alternate use and designed a package for presentation to the city, the developer and the public. The speed with which we've put together the plan will make it possible for Pacifica to apply for California State Library Grants. Hundreds of copies of the plan have already been distributed. A good idea gains power by passion and technology working together. This proposal (in pdf format) can be seen at: http://www.votevreeland.org/papers/NewCityHallLibrary.pdf ---------------------------------------------------------------------- STAFF PROFILE David Gardner Dave is a photographer, multi-media designer, and our local webmaster. I first met Dave when he was a student of mine at Skyline College. He was a good photographer even then and learned to print beautifully. Although working as a full time journeyman insulator, he managed to keep doing his photography, eventually leaving that job and pursuing photography full-time. Dave has created a number of photographic projects, including a series on the Embarcadero Freeway as it was being torn down and used for improvised shelters by the homeless, and an extensive web-based project documenting Golden Gate Park, The Visual Golden Gate Park. Dave has worked for me over the last few years as a photographic assistant, web master, and the engineer and co-designer of the "With a New Eye" DVD project. Badlands National Park, South Dakota. 1997. 11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper This photograph, part of the National Parks series "With a New Eye", was made on the May 1997 trip to South Dakota. The erosion patterns in the muddy hills were very typical of the Badlands, the reddish soil remarkable. This photograph has rarely been shown, but remains one of my favorites from the project. It is the opening page for the Badlands chapter in the "With a New Eye" book. We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame for $195, framed for an additional $75. This print at this price is offered through November 30. We'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by December 15. This photograph won't be available again at this price. http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_november_2002.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WORKSHOP NEWS Stephen is teaching in PROVENCE! Please visit and enjoy. Digital prints from the original film negatives are available, contact us for more information. http://homepage.mac.com/sjphotog/valley-portfolio/index.html We have also added some installation photographs for the Valley Project Exhibition at the California Academy of Sciences in 1986. http://homepage.mac.com/sjphotog/gcvp-install-cas/index.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- In the Media On Monday, November 11, National Public Radio started a 4 part series on California's Great Central Valley on "All Things Considered." They mention my Central Valley project and its book, "The Great Central Valley: California's Heartland". The series is featured on the NPR website. http://www.npr.org/programs/atc/features/2002/nov/central_valley/index.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PhotoPlus in New York The buzz at the PhotoPlus trade show in New York was all about the new, higher resolution, cameras from Kodak (the DCS 14n) and Canon (EOS-1Ds). With resolutions of almost 14mb and 11mb respectively, these cameras generated a great deal of interest, it seemed like everyone wanted to try one. The Sigma SD9, using the Foveon X3 chip, seemed overlooked by comparison, even though it's the only one of the three that uses a new camera technology. http://kodak.com/global/en/professional/products/cameras/dcsPro14n/dcsPro14nIndex.jhtml?id=0.2.6.30.5.8.3&lc=en http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/EOS1DS/index.html http://www.sigma-photo.com/Html/news/news_sd9_fs.htm Another very interesting technology came from Sphereon, a company that has built a self-contained scanning panoramic camera. The pano camera seems fine, but the really exciting development is their new HDR+ high dynamic range recording and file format technology that captures 26 stops of dynamic range in a 96 bit file. A photograph at sunset in Napa with the sun in it was not blown out, nor were the shadows and nearby trees blocked up. Amazing, and a good technology that we'd like to see permeate the market. http://www.spheron.com/ The sessions in which I participated were well attended and the audience was serious about getting the real world information they needed. The digital world has long since arrived and these folks were intent on making smart decisions about their initial implementations and even more so about planning their upgrade paths. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Digital Garage Sale Want to help us share some of our extra stuff? ...old Macs, new monitors (and older), dye-sub printers, inkjet printers, maybe an Iris Realist and big HP 3500 Designjet? It is the simplest and most usable substitute for the Epson drivers I have seen yet. It bypasses the Epson driver entirely, using its own screening and profile based color management. IMAGEPRINT overcomes the Epson print length restrictions and does a much better job on black and white photographs printed with color inks. The black and white capability really sings with the new 7 color Epson printers (2200, 7600 & 9600) that include a gray ink. IMAGEPRINT does a very good job on the photographic-like inkjet papers. http://www.colorbytesoftware.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Upcoming Lectures Stephen will be delivering a lecture for the National Park Service at the National Interpretors Workshop in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Thursday, November 14, 2002. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE VISIT US Please come visit us at our gallery and see our original prints in person. The photograph of "Trees, Fitzgerald Reserve" was the largest print in the "Ansel Adams: Inspiration and Influence" show last summer and will now be part of their special collections. Special thanks to Rich Edwards and Laird Foshay for making this purchase possible. * New York panoramic print arrives in NYC New York Art Commissioner Deborah Bershad accepted our print donation of the New York Skyline Panoramic in November. We received a nice thank you letter from Mayor Bloomberg and ideas are evolving on how the photograph might be useful in a permanent memorial to what was lost in the attacks on September 11. A big thank you goes to my agent Stephen Brown for arranging the ceremony with Mayor Willie Brown in San Francisco and the Arts Commission in New York City. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- View From Here: Teaching Digitally Digital photography strengthens field photography instruction. The advent of the digital age of photography provides unique opportunities for field photography instruction, reviewing work on camera screens as it is made and on portable computers soon after, examining exposure, composition and emotional impact. Group evening reviews can also be conducted using digital projection for added feedback. High resolution printers can be available to put some images to the ultimate test. The process can go full circle every day; opening files, reviewing success, and printing some of the photographs made during that day, constantly going back in the field, putting into practice lessons learned. In my workshops, we use this real-time digital feedback to discuss technical and aesthetic issues, tapping into emotional responses to landscape, working toward images that are uniquely your own. * Instant image review: -reviewing work on camera screens as it is made -remaking the photograph until it is right * Technical Control: -exposure check with histogram -focus check -depth of field check -color balance check * Aesthetic Impact: -composition and emotional impact -real 2d scene comprehension -design and interplay of form analysis -distillation of the essential -silly inclusions can be seen * Additional Advantages: -group evening reviews can be conducted using digital projection -high resolution printers to see photographs in their final form ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE VISIT US Please come visit us at our gallery and see our original prints in person. I had fought wind for days, made a few images I felt good about, but considered the trip something of a struggle. I was leaving the park thinking the color had gone from the sky, when I rounded a bend and saw this dune. Setting up the camera very quickly, and making a good judgment as to the scan time and light remaining, worked itself out into a photograph that has been very well received. We're offering an original, signed 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame for $195, framed for an additional $75. This print at this price is offered through March 31. We'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by April 15. About the Program Each month we offer a signed, original print, at a special price. This is a great opportunity to own a very affordable fine-art photograph. Orders are taken for a 30-day period, then printed and shipped within two weeks after the close. When it's over, it's over, these prints won't be available again at this price. http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_feb-march_2003.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LECTURE SERIES Basic Digital Camera Use Wednesday, April 9, 7-9pm $15 Photographer Stephen Johnson takes the audience through basic digital camera functionality, features, controls and working procedures. The presentation is designed to de-mystify camera controls and offer insight into how these new devices can provide instant gratification and still be used to learn to make stronger photographs. It will examine the diversity of features available on various cameras and present a short primer on digital printing. A question and answer period will conclude the evening. http://www.sjphoto.com/lecture-series.html Admission: $15. Admission price can be applied to any purchase during the evening. RSVP is required as seating is limited to 20 guests. Call (650) 355-7507 or email michelle@sjphoto.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WORKSHOP NEWS * Death Valley Field Workshop Retrospective We had a great time on our Death Valley Workshop in January. Our days were full: getting up early to experience a terrific moonset from mile-high Dante's View one day and watch the sun rise over the Dunes another; enjoying the variety of light available as the day progressed at locations as different as the Artists Palette and Titus canyon; and watching the sun sink behind the Panamint mountains were all wonderful experiences. We'd gather for a quick dinner, then spend the evening reviewing our work on a digital projector, generating feedback and suggestions that we could apply to the next day's shooting. The evening sessions were capped off on the last evening when we set up the review on a screen out in the desert, under the stars. Ever the clowns, we made a unique panoramic group portrait at Ubehebe Crater at the end of the final day. http://www.sjphoto.com/dv-pano-workshop.html * Coming this weekend. - Intermediate Digital Photography Workshop (March 15-16, 2003) http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-wksp-int.html * New Workshop: an 8 Week Class starting this Thursday! - Fundamentals of Digital Photography (March 13-May 15) Thursday evenings for 8 Weeks 7-9pm http://www.sjphoto.com/digital-photo-fundamentals.html For some time, we've been interested in offering a multi-evening class structured much like a college course. This teaching arrangement gives us the distinct advantage of being able to deliver information over time, in smaller segments, coupled with the additional opportunity to digest and experiment between classes. We have now scheduled a Thursday evening course, Fundamentals of Digital Photography, to begin this Thursday March 13. Each evening will run from 7pm to 9pm. * Check out our workshop web page for information on all of the workshops that we offer. http://www.sjphoto.com/workshops.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTECARD SET FROM THE NATIONAL PARKS We're considering publishing a set of National Park color notecards from "With a New Eye." This 12 card set with matching envelopes would be a selection of some of the parks project's greatest hits to date. We'd like to generate pre-orders from our mailing list, to help us make the cards happen. This set of 12 notecards will retail for over $10, but we're offering a pre-order price of 3 sets for $20. Interested? Go to: http://www.sjphoto.com/natl-park-notecard.html to have a look and place your order. A full refund will be given if we do not proceed and deliver your notecards by June 1st. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TECHNOLOGY SOFTWARE Adobe's Camera Raw Plug-in During the summer a number of us worked on the testing and development of Adobe's Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop. It is designed to take RAW camera files from a number of camera manufacturers and give the user a high degree of control of the acquisition and transformation of the photograph into Photoshop. It is a critically useful product, giving the photographer incentive to preserve the best data from the camera by encouraging the use of the RAW format, and allowing control of highlight and shadow, contrast, white point and some digital camera artifact repair. Steve will be explore the software in the March lecture. Adobe sells the product for $99. Let us know if you want more Journals. Journal In the air over Colorado 12/8/02 10pm The night seems bejeweled. It seems a full moon, the Rockies below are clear and frosted, tiny sparkles adorning their dark icy expanse. The cloud blanket stopped at Denver, the rising land beyond its reach. Now the earth looms nearer, in sinuous stretches of black, dimly lit ice and occasional clusters of yellow orange outposts of town lights. In the distance to the north a thick soft haze transitions into star fields. As the land drops down into the canyonlands of the Colorado, the haze spreads back, then recedes again. The jewels vary in color, mercury-vapor bluish-green, to quartz halogen yellow, tungsten orange and fluorescent green. Such strange mingling of color amid these small gestures of light spotting the terrain. The soft thick blanket of haze with the stars above makes it seem as though we're a hundred miles up, just above the earth's atmosphere, on a journey outward. The occasional blinking lights of other craft makes orbital space seem busy, routine with ships going about their business. It's not hard to imagine, just not quite there. We are so small, a perspective from any distance confirms it. The airplane screens play images of people talking, engaged activities of supposed interest, banal, ordinary small engagements, cameras close so as to even notice the human interplay. We are otherwise nearly lost in any wide view. The cities validate our power over land, surface though it may be. We occupy those spaces, cast our shadows, congregate to consequence, or so delude ourselves. 10:30pm The weather cleared today, after days of rain. All the days I had to wander and photograph the Great Smoky Mountains were filled with rain. I wandered and worked anyway, umbrellas duck-taped to the rental car trunk, tapped to the camera, sheltering the PowerBook and the camera from the constant streams. It was quite an amusing sight. I was determined to try. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE VISIT US Please come visit us at our gallery and see our original prints in person. Dune at Dusk, White Sands National Monument. 1997. 11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper This is the last photograph I made on my trip to White Sands in 1997. We'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by April 15. http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_feb-march_2003.html * April Featured Print Hills and Haze Looking South. Mt. St. Helens National Monument. 1995. 11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper. After a long day's climb, and a spectacular view of the volcano to the north, I was trying to take in the surrounding space from atop Mt. St. Helens. This view south looking back toward the Columbia River kept stopping me. It was so different than the complex and dramatic form behind me, that at first, I didn't see it as a photograph. I'm glad I did, it became the back cover of my 1997 Wall Calendar, and a widely collected poster. * About the Program Each month we offer a signed, original print, at a special price. This is a great opportunity to own a very affordable fine-art photograph. Orders are taken for a 30-day period, then printed and shipped within two weeks after the close. When it's over, it's over, these prints won't be available again at this price. http://www.sjphoto.com/print_special_april_2003.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LECTURE SERIES Digital Cameras Revealed Wednesday, April 9, 7-9pm $15 Photographer Stephen Johnson takes the audience through basic digital camera functionality, features, controls and working procedures. The presentation is designed to de-mystify camera controls and offer insight into how these new devices can provide instant gratification and still be used to learn to make stronger photographs. It will examine the diversity of features available on various cameras and present a short primer on digital printing. Adobe's Camera RAW plug-in will be demonstrated. A question and answer period will conclude the evening. http://www.sjphoto.com/lecture-series.html Admission: $15. Admission price can be applied to any purchase during the evening. From The Great Central Valley Project. 1985. 11x14 Pigment Print on Rag paper. This photograph continues to be one of my favorites from the Great Central Valley book. I was wandering through the Sacramento Delta and came on a whole field full of dry corn. From the color and texture, I knew there had to be a photograph there. I stopped the car and just walked alongside the edge of the field until I saw an arrangement of line that caught my eye. The soft hues and gentle form fit well with my ever surer aesthetic of pastel, real world color. * About the Program Each month we offer a signed, original print, at a special price. It will be a good nuts and bolts evening for improving your photographs. http://www.sjphoto.com/lecture-series.html Admission: $15, $5 of which can be applied to any purchase during the evening. It was awash in wildflowers, and the contrast between the new life and the burned trees was quite handsome. One particular photograph stood out from that day, and I made a 27x34 inch print which I have been looking at for years. A friend and former student, Barbara Sheppard, who had purchased an 8x10 print of the photograph, came into my gallery in the late nineties, remarking how much she loved the image, particularly the deer in the photograph. I said ³what deer?² and she proceeded to show me. I made the photograph, had been looking at it for years, and had never noticed the buck and doe sitting beside a tree. The power of the sheer resolution of this new technology was once again driven home. We're offering an 11x14 inch print, matted to 16x20 and ready to frame for $195, framed for an additional $75. This print at this price is offered through August 31. We'll be taking orders until then, and shipping them out by September 15th. Each month we offer a signed original print at a special price.
